New York City residents can purchase various types of backyard compost bins and also worm compost bins at reduced prices from certain NYC Compost Project sites. The models available (shown below) are equally suitable for city composting; they are easy to use and fit into an automobile for easy transportation—the differences are primarily in appearance. Proof of New York City residency is required to buy a bin. The recycled plastic bins are available to NYC residents for $50 to $60—these bins normally retail for $75 to $95, plus sales tax, shipping, and handling. (Due to budget cuts, these are no longer available for the DSNY-subsidized price of $20.) The metal garbage can composter is sold for $22. Worm bin starter kits, including one pound of red wiggler worms, are also available for $55. Residents who attend NYC Compost Project “wormshops” in any borough can purchase a worm bin, including worms, for $44. Compost Cranks are periodically available to NYC residents for $42 at some Compost Project sites. Just crank the beveled spiral tip in and pull out without turning to mix and aerate your compost; easily penetrates densely packed or rough compost.
